Entering search terms

Search modes and search items

Two search modes are available: Standard mode and Expert mode.
Standard mode has some search items and Expert mode has all search items.
Click the links to switch between Standard mode and Expert mode.

Search items in Standard mode are as follows:

Enter information (search terms) about the bibliographies in search items, or select any down-arrow button from drop-down menus.

Example: if you search for the materials containing "Japan" in the title:

Boolean search

When you enter search terms in two or more search items, two Boolean searches are avalable:

Example: if you search for the materials containing "Japan" in the title and containing "Fujitsu" in the name of the author:

Example: if you search for the materials containing "Japan" in the title and not containing "Fujitsu" in the name of the author:

Note: In Boolean "NOT" operator search you must enter search terms not putting "^"(hat) in at least one search item.

When you enter two or more search terms in one search item, three Boolean searches are available:

Example: if you search for the materials containing "Japan" and "U.S.A" in the title:

Example: if you search for the materials containing "Japan" or "U.S.A." in the title:

Example: if you search for the materials containing "Japan" and not containing "U.S.A." in the title:

Note: In Boolean "NOT" operator search you must enter search terms not putting "^"(hat) in at least one search item.

Primary search items and secondary search items

The following items are primary search items. You can execute search only by any primary search items. The following items are secondary search items. You must combine secondary search items with at least one primary search item.

Keyword search and letter search

Keyword search
Search for the materials containing search terms as keywords.
Letter search
Search for the materials containing search terms as mere letters.

Example: if you search for the materials containing "and" in the title:

In Letter search the following operations are available:

Perfect match:enter search termsonly. and
First part match:put "*" after search terms. Andes
Middle part match:put "*" before and after search terms. Cassandra
Last part match:put "*" before search terms. Poland
Any part match:put "*" between search terms. Almond

Keyword search items are as follows:

When you execute Letter search by Keyword search items, you must put "#" at the head of search terms.

Letter search items are as follows:

Example: if you search for the materials containing "Japan" in the title:
Title

Example: if you search for the materials that the title is "Japan":

Example: if you search for the materials that the title ends with "Japan":

Example: if you search for the materials published in the "1900s":
Publised year

Sorting list of bibliographies

Specify sort key and/or sort direction to sort list of bibliographies.
Note: in search only by "Registered No." or "Material ID" or "Call No.", you cannot sort the list of bibliographies.

The following search items are specifiable as sort key. According to the primary sort key, the secondary sort key is determined automatically.

Sort direction
Two sort orders are available: Ascendant (ASC) order and Descendant (DESC) order. The sort order of the secondary sort key depends on the primary sort key.

Thesaurus search

Check the checkboxes ( Synonym Broaden Narrow ) to execute Thesaurus search. You can check two or more checkboxes at a time.
Which search items can be used in Thesaurus search depends on the system.
Note: You cannot execute Thesaurus search on NII (National Institute of Informatics).

Executing search

Enter search terms, then click the button. Wait a moment, and List of bibliographies is displayed.

Click the button to clear the search terms.
Note: It is returned in the condition immediately after it is called when it transits from Reference history.

Reference history

Click the button and Reference history is displayed.

Bookmark

The bibliography referred to can be kept. The bibliography kept later can be referred to. The thing that a bibliography list is kept is said as "Bookmark". A reference, a clearance can be done toward bookmark.
The bibliography list kept in bookmark is indicated. Bibliographical details is displayed when number of bibliogr aphy kept is one.
All bibliographies are removed from bookmark.
The number which can be registerd is restricted with the system.

Message

Conditions for the search has not been entered. Please enter conditions and search again.
The above message is displayed when conditions for the search has not been entered and the [search] button is clicked.
Please enter conditions and search again.

The bibliography could not be found.
The above message is displayed when there are no bibliographies matched the entered conditions.
Please change the conditions and search again.

Cannot execute the search by the entered conditions. Please add additional conditions for the search and search again.
The above message is displayed when you enter search terms only in secondary search items and search.
Please enter search terms in at least one primary search item and search again.

The number of search results exceeded * *. Please add additional conditions for the search and search again.
The above message is displayed when the number of search results exceeds the number limited by the system.
Please add additional conditions for the search and search again.

Reference history doesn't exist.
The above message is displayed when a "R. history" button is pushed when it is never being reference after browser is started.
It can't be used if it is not after a reference is done.

Bookmark doesn't exist.
The above message is displayed when a "show" button is pushed when there is no saved bookmark.
It can't be used if there is no bookmark.

It is A cases that can be registered in bookmark. Because B cases have been registered at present, specified bibliographies can't be registered.
The above message is displayed when it tries to register beyond the number of the maximums which can be registered as bookmark.
It can't be added to bookmark.

Cannot connect with the server. Please wait a moment and then execute again.
The above message is displayed when you cannot connect with the OPAC server due to too many accesses.
Please wait a moment and then search again.

Cannot currently execute the search. Please wait a moment and then execute again.
The above message is displayed when the OPAC server has some trouble.
Please wait a moment and then search again.

Cannot communicate with the server. Please wait a moment and then execute again.
The above message is displayed when it takes too much time to communicate with the server and the connection has timed out.
Please wait a moment and then search again.
